UK Coke workers to go on strike
Cleveland Star
Saturday 4th September, 2010
Worker’s at a Coca-Cola bottling plant in north London are to go on strike after the company offered what the trade union calls a “derisory” pay increase offer of 2%.
The trade union Unite, which represents the vast majority (113) of the 150 workers at the plant, says that they expect Coca-Cola to make an offer that takes into account inflation and the increase in VAT, as well as the true cost of living in London, one of the most expensive cities in the world.
Unite has said an internal vote on whether to strike received 81% support and that the first two six hour stoppages will take place next Wednesday.
Coca-Cola’s plant in north London produces around 2 million bottles per day and the company employs 4000 workers in the UK.
Unite is the trade union responsible for the major disruption caused to British Airways during an extensive cabin crew strike.
